TitleMasao Kobayashi letter to Elizabeth Bayley Willis regarding life in Camp Harmony, a section of the Puyallup Assembly Center on July 31, 1942
AuthorKobayashi, Masao
Date of Publication1942
NotesMasao Kobayashi writes Elizabeth Bayley Willis, his former teacher from Garfield High School about his experience in Camp Harmony, Area A of the Puyallup Assembly Center. He writes about his worries about his schooling at the relocation center. He suggests he might have to work instead, "...making camouflage nets for the army or working on irrigation ditches." He talks about his desire to be back at Garfield and what will happen at the conclusion of the war saying "What then? Where can we go? Can we return to our home cities or towns? Who knows what's going to happen?". This is part of a series of letters Kobayashi writes to Willis between June and December of 1942.
Contextual NotesElizabeth Bayley Willis taught English and Latin at Garfield High School in Seattle and headed the school's art department. Her papers include letters and other material sent to Willis by her Garfield High School Japanese American students during World War II. At the time of writing, mainly 1942, most of the students were incarcerated at the Puyallup Assembly Center, called Camp Harmony. The letters are filed in the subject series "Nisei Students."
