| Notes | Newsletter warning union members about tricks used by anti-union elements called "Red-Baiting." Anti-union workers accuse union members of being communists, thus creating divisions, disunity, and suspicions within the union. The newsletter calls for union members to be on the lookout for "Red-Baiters" and not to give into their tricks, to stay strong and unified.
Quote from document: "This history of Local 7 and the other Unions shows that any time an attack is being made on the wages, hours, and conditions of the workers that the employers always cry 'communist.' This trick of calling 'communist' is known in the trade unions as RED-BAITING. Baiting of any kind is the calling of names in order to get people to take their eyes of the target- to get the workers to forget wages, hours, and conditions. Red-baiting is a bosses trick of calling anything 'communist', when they are afraid to discuss issues on their merits." |
