Contextual NotesThe Cedar River watershed, located in the eastern central portion of King County, Washington, is nearly 24 miles long and roughly 10 miles wide. It has been in use as Seattle's main water supply since 1901. Hydroelectric power on the Cedar River was developed under the administration of the Seattle Water Department. Electricity from this development began to serve Seattle in 1905. Completed in 1914, this relatively small masonry dam operated for flood control and hydroelectric power. It was built by Seattle City Light and located between the old 1904 crib dam and the powerhouse at Cedar Falls. It was intended to enlarge the Cedar Lake basin and store additional water for the generating equipment of the Cedar Falls hydroelectric plant.
