| Contextual Notes | St. Michael is located on the east coast of St. Michael Island in Norton Sound, 43 miles southwest of Unalakleet, Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. A Russian stockaded post was established here in 1833. The population of 109 in 1880 was predominantly Eskimo. The St. Michael post office and an American military post were established in 1897 following the Klondike gold strike. Most of the increased Yukon River traffic at that time originated at St. Michael.
