| Historical Notes | Napoleon and Cambacérès are shown as two figures from the Italian Commedia del'Arte: Napoleon as Harlequin, and Cambacérès as Pulcinella. They stand on either side of a large cube, representing the map of the Empire. Napoleon has a pile of gold coins under his hand, as if he were placing a bet, and there is a bag of coins on the floor. They are dishing up large strings of macaroni, representing the multiple conscriptions that were needed to replenish the army that was being decimated by the continuing military campaigns. The soldier standing behind Napoleon has lost a leg, and has a bandage on his head and his other foot. He's smoking a pipe, but "fuming" as well because Napoleon and Cambacérès are doing so little to help him. His reference to a "Louis" is tongue-in-cheek, referring both to a coin and to Louis XVIII.
