Je suis sur les epines
TitleJe suis sur les epines
CreatorAnonymous
Publisher[Journal de Paris]
Place of Publication[France--Paris]
Date[1814]
Caption TextCaption on image:
[Above]: Je suis sur les Epines (colloquially: I'm in a tough spot!, or I'm feeling anxious)
[Below]: Je perds la Carte, je ne bats que d'une aile, Je ne sais sur quel pied danser (I'm losing the map, I'm flapping only one wing, I don't know which foot to dance on.)

Posters on wall:
Theatre
Aujourd'hui 30 Mars 1814 (Today, March 30, 1814)
les Evenements imprévus (unexpected Events)
Le Tartuffe (refers to a Moliere play by the same name, in which a hypocritical imposter causes domestic havoc but eventually is found out and punished.)

Le Tyran Corrigé (The tyrant corrected)
Le Tyran domestique (The domestic tyrant)
Le revanche forcée (The inevitable revenge)
La dernier répresentation du Valet-maitre (The last portrayal of the Servant-Master)

Scrolls on the ground:
Carte de France (Map of France), and Hollande , Italie, Pologne (Poland), Espagne (Spain), Suisse (Switzerland).

Historical NotesAppearing one week after Napoleon's exile to Elba, this cartoon illustrates the imperial defeat. Napoleon walks gingerly on a bed of thorns, and one of his wings has fallen to the ground. The map of France is torn, scrolls named with lost battles litter the ground, and the posters on the wall advertise theatrical productions about his downfall.
