| Historical Notes | For years, the English feared that Napoleon would invade England. In the end, he was defeated and was brought to England thinking he would be granted asylum there. That was not to be. Instead, after several weeks of negotiations while he sat on board the Bellerophon in Plymouth Bay, he was transferred to another ship and taken to exile in St. Helena.
In the drawing, Napoleon stands on the cannon on the deck of the Bellerophon. There is a chain around his ankle. General Bertrand, one of Napoleon's most loyal officers who shared his exiles on both Elba and St. Helena, crouches below Napoleon to look through the porthole and comments that the British have erected a "prospect" for him. The only thing in sight is a gallows with a dangling noose, which leads Napoleon to say he doesn't like that prospect. Sitting on the other cannon is a sailor, perhaps John Bull, who comments that instead of sending Napoleon to Hell Bay (Elba), they should executed him in the first place.
