CreatorAnonymous
Place of Publication[France -- Paris]
Date[1814]
Caption TextCaption on image:
Ah! Papa, les belles bulles de Savon que tu as faites! (Oh, Papa, you've made beautiful soap bubbles!)

Dialogue and signage:
[Interior of bubbles] Rome, Pologne (Poland), Espagne (Spain), Suisse (Switzerland), Westphalie (Westphalia), Hollande (Holland), Italie (Italy), Grand Empire.

Historical NotesNapoleon, sitting on a low stool, creates seven soap bubbles, each representing a territory he has annexed to the Empire through military conquest. The bubbles are symbolic of the ephemeral and illusory nature of his Empire. A bowl of soap solution is overturned at his feet. The implication? He won't be making more bubbles.
