| Notes | This slide shows the furthest extent of the ash kill of trees on the Toutle River. There were spotted areas where the hot ash had killed the trees and nearby there were areas with living green trees still present. Unknown to us was the fact that a man and his son were in the dead trees in the upper center of the picture. Their bodies had not been found yet, but they were still there. They had been fishing in the Toutle River. After the eruption started, they tried to outrun the hot ash cloud. At the last moment they decided to climb a tree for safety, which was a mistake, for if they had run another 50 feet, they would have been safe! |
