NotesSlide shows top of the Mount St. Helens crater when we arrived there to first start investigating and flying around it. The top is missing from the crater, blown off with large amounts of white clouds coming out of it. The white clouds above the crater are condensed water vapor being condensed in the atmosphere and coming from the volcanic vents inside the crater. Even though the cloud is white, it still contained measurable quantities of Sulfur dioxide [7446-09-5] gas and particulate matter which we sampled to determine the degree of volatile trace element emissions at this time of the eruption phase.
