NotesSlide shows a diagram of the backpack volcanic sampling system. It is an aluminum box that contains dry ice. Into that dry ice mixture are four condenser tubes, which are fed gases from a quartz lined titanium tube. A vacuum pump is used to pull the volcanic gases through the quartz lined titanium probe into the four quartz condenser tubes that are suspended in dry ice. Normally, we would have a mixture of dry ice and acetone, but packing the liquid acetone in that rough terrain is very difficult, so we just used chunks of dry ice instead, which would condense any of the volatile gases into these collection tubes for analysis. The gases were pulled through using a twelve volt vacuum pump and battery system where we can measure not only the flow rate, but the system vacuum as well. Both measurements are needed to calculate volume of the amount of air that was sampled. It is all backpack portable so it was a very useful little system to be able to carry around in a very difficult environment such as the crater.
