NotesGraduate student, Mike Thompson, with a filter pack and a backpack of pumps is holding the filter pack over one of the active vents collecting gaseous samples. These filter packs were designed to collect acidic gases on Lithium hydroxide [1310-65-2] filters which we can then analyze by neutron activation. He is wearing a flight suit to protect him and his clothing from acidic acids. And he has a gas mask on. The active vents were quite hot during this time period.
