NotesSlide shows a crater in front of Mount St. Helens. These craters were caused by the ash flow that was blasted out of the main crater during the initial eruption on May 18. The ash contained volatile gases. As the gases leaked out of the ash, the crater would form as the ash collapsed. The crater is approximately 200 meters across at the top and probably 100 meters deep. This view looks more like a lunar landscape out in front of Mount St. Helens. There were craters of this type all over the area, littering it.
