Includes old names for different regions such as "Quivira" for the Pacific Northwest and "Missouries" for the Midwest. Of note, the "River of the West" is shown extending from the Pacific Northwest into "Sioux" territory. The Missouri River is labeled "Missouri - Navigable 1300 miles". The mountains to the west of the headwaters of the Arkansas River are shown as the "Paduca" mountains.

| Contextual Notes | Though the cartographer for this map is unknown, Thomas Conder (fl. 1775-1801) most likely engraved the map. Conder worked on a number of important atlases, most notably "Walpole's British Traveller" (1784), "Boswell's Antiquities of England and Wales" (1786) and Wilkinson's "General Atlas of the World" (1794). Though it is not known when this map was first published, it seems to have been published by Robert Wilkinson (fl. 1785-1825) in London in the "General Atlas of the World" in 1794 (Tooley, 128; Moreland and Bannister, 174; Wheat, 242; Louisiana State Museum, acc. 1997.078.050).
The map illustrates the trend in mapmaking towards less ornate decoration by the close of the eighteenth century.
