Shows California as an island with a region marked "Nova Albion" in its northern area. Of note, displays a large lake in the northwest of North America called "The Great Lake of Thoago or Thoya" with two rivers connecting it to the Pacific Ocean. The Mississippi River is shown as feeding into the Gulf of Mexico. Several islands and areas are marked in the far northwest off the coast of North America including Desolation, I. Colubra, I. Wanguino, I. Payham, and Maquino (Wagner, entry 520). The Canary Islands, the Cabo Verde islands and the Azores are displayed prominently off the coast of Africa. Illustrations in the title cartouche depict scenes of Native American warriors wearing feather headdresses, shooting arrows, engaging in warfare and seated with native birds and plants.

| Contextual Notes | John Senex was a surveyor, engraver, publisher and Geographer to Queen Anne. His works include "System of Geography" (with Jeremiah Seller and C. Price), "General Atlas" fiolio 1708-12, Lawson's "Carolina" (1709), "England Atlas" (1714), Ogilby's "Roads" (1719), "New General Atlas" (1721), Mayo's "Barbados" (1722), Norden's "Hertfordshire" (1723), Budgen's "Sussex" (1724), "First Settlements America" (1735), and "Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Hants., and Berkshire" (1746) (Tooley, 574-6).
Hon Harris was an engraver and draughtsman at Balls Head Court on Newgate Street in London. He engraved for many cartographers including Collins (1693), Morden (1696), Gascoigne (1700-3), Prat (1704), Cole (1710) and Senex (1719) (Tooley, 284).
This map was published in John Senex's "New General Atlas" in 1721 which may have been published as early as 1719. Of note the map depicts a number of strange islands and regions in the northwest of North America. Wagner notes an "I. S. Iago" and "I. Quiesinto" near the mouth of a river that flows into the "Great Lake of Thoago or Thoya." He also notes names of places that "do not belong there: I. Cosubra in 52 degrees, I. Wanguino in 53 degrees, I. Payham in 55 degrees, Maquino and two other unrecognizable ones on land named Desloation in 52 degrees, a Zapozitin in 60 degrees, an L. Aquinanbock in 60 degrees, and an L. Isles in 57 degrees" (Wagner, entry 520). Wagner also notes that Mississippi is drawn according to "Coronelli type" and the rest of the map is of "Briggs type" (entry 520).
