Printed in lower left corner is a key explaining symbols used for forts, capital towns, villages, Indian Towns, new roads and engagements.

Printed in bottom border:

Printed in upper right:
"NB. This Map is divided according to his Majesty's Proclomation. ….English …French …Spanish …Indians."

Contains notes throughout on various geographic locations, discoveries, hunting rights and land ownership for several Native American tribes.

Contains compass rose in Atlantic Ocean north of the Bahamas.

Depicts North America including the outline of southern Baffin's Bay, Hudson's Bay, Nova Scotia, New Foundland, New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Florida, Louisiana, the Great Lakes and the Great Fishing Bank of New Foundland. Also depicts the West Indies and part of northern South America. Divides Mexico into Yucatan, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, New Biscay, Guaxaca, Panuo, and Tlascala. Of note, the far northwest portion of North America contains the note, "These Parts Are Intirely Unknown" and leaves this region blank. Depicts the "West Sea" and mythical kingdom of Quivira. Shows northern California as New Albion. Shows a large island near Strait of Juan de Fuca with description "This Part Little known." Shows outline of part of Alaska with note, "Lands discoverd by the Russians in 1741 But as they did not go on shore its not known whither they are Isles or Continent." Also includes route of Spanish Galleons in Gulf of Mexico. Includes location and land occupied by various tribes including the Eskimo, the Cherokee and the Choctows. Surrounding the cartouche is a forested scene with two natives in feathered skirts.

Contextual NotesJohn Rocque (fl. 1734-62) was a Huguenot who resettled in London. He was a surveyor, engraver and publisher. He was also the Topographer to the Prince of Wales. His most famous works include a large map of "London" in 24 sheets, "Bristol" (1750), "Dublin" (1756) and this map of North America (1761) (Moreland and Bannister, 169; Tooley, 544).
