Cayuse/Nez Perce man known as Tauitau or Tu Ah Tway poses with headdress and other beaded objects
TitleCayuse/Nez Perce man known as Tauitau or Tu Ah Tway poses with headdress and other beaded objects
NotesStudio portrait of seated man with feathers in his hair, spotted shirt with armbands, blanket across lap & fur around neck. Set next to him are a beaded, feathered headdress, a widebrimmed hat with beaded band, a pipe, a wide-beaded collar and other objects. Painted backdrop of tree is behind him.

Note from unidentified source: Tu-Ah-Tway or 'Young Chief' as he was also known. He was a son of Allicot [Ollokot], the brother of Chief Joseph. His mother was a descendent of the famous Cayuse chief Tauitowe (as the name appears in the old histories) also called Young Chief, who was prominent in Dr. Whitman's day, also during the Cayuse War and at Gov. Stevens Walla Walla council. This man died about 1920. On account of his lineage and his personality his memory is much revered among the Umatillas and Nez Perces of the Chief Joseph strain.
