| Notes | Eleven canoes started the three-mile race in Penn's Cove on August 10, 1936, but only eight managed to finish. High winds caused one canoe, Lone Eagle from the Lummi Reservation, to sink just a few feet from the finish line. The winner of the race was Saanich No. 5 from the Saanich Tribe in British Columbia. Some 12, 000 viewers watched the competition which climaxed the Coupeville Indian Water Festival.
