Puget Sound Salish man : General Taylor, ca. 1900
Puget Sound Salish man : General Taylor, ca. 1900
TitlePuget Sound Salish man : General Taylor, ca. 1900
PhotographerWilse, Anders B.
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1900
NotesThe man in this portrait is identified as "General Taylor, " but unfortunately, the photographer did not record his tribe. By 1900, many of the Puget Sound Indians lived on reservations, but a few continued to occupy their traditional lands outside of the reservations, hunting and fishing and working for cash income.

Norwegian-born Anders Wilse moved to Seattle in 1890 to work as a surveyor and engineer. After photographing the building of the Great Northern Railway through the Cascades and working as a cartographer, Wilse turned to commercial photography in 1897. In 1900, Wilse left for a visit to Norway and never returned. (Carolyn J. Marr, "Anders Beer Wilse: Photographer of the Pacific Northwest and Norway." Columbia 8, no. 4 (Summer 1994): 24-29.)
