Plateau family group, ca. 1900
TitlePlateau family group, ca. 1900
PhotographerRutter, Thomas H.
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Yakima
Dateca. 1900
NotesA proud Plateau family poses for the camera of a Yakima-area photographer at the turn of the 19th century. The mother and infant wear cloth head coverings, and they carry a beaded bag with a running horse design. Floral designs were popular in the late 19th century, and designs featuring animals became more common in the early 20th century.

The Yakama, Nez Perce, Spokane, and other Plateau tribes of Washington state live east of the Cascade Range in the area drained by the Columbia River.

Thomas H. Rutter, a British veterinarian, came to the United States from Australia in the late 1860s. After photographing in Montana in the 1870s and 1880s, and Tacoma, Washington, in the 1890s, Rutter opened a studio in North Yakima (now Yakima). He retired around 1906 and died in 1925. (Steven L. Grafe, "Lee Moorhouse: Photographer of the Inland Empire." Oregon Historical Quarterly 98, no. 4 (Winter 1997-98): 477; Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, p. 502.)
