Plateau man with a dentalium necklace, ca. 1900
Plateau man with a dentalium necklace, ca. 1900
TitlePlateau man with a dentalium necklace, ca. 1900
PhotographerRutter, Thomas H.
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Yakima
Dateca. 1900
NotesIn this portrait, part of a series taken in a Yakima photographer's studio, a young Plateau man poses wearing a beaded belt, necklace, choker, armbands, and earrings. The large horn-shaped dentalium shells in his necklace came from the waters off Vancouver Island and were traded long distances to inland tribes. Traditionally, both men and women wore shell and bead ornaments. The dentalium shells were often interspersed with blue or red glass beads.

The Yakama, Nez Perce, Spokane, and other Plateau tribes of Washington state live east of the Cascade Range in the area drained by the Columbia River.

Thomas H. Rutter, a British veterinarian, came to the United States from Australia in the late 1860s. After photographing in Montana in the 1870s and 1880s, and Tacoma, Washington, in the 1890s, Rutter opened a studio in North Yakima (now Yakima). He retired around 1906 and died in 1925. (Steven L. Grafe, "Lee Moorhouse: Photographer of the Inland Empire." Oregon Historical Quarterly 98, no. 4 (Winter 1997-98): 477; Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, p. 502.)
