| Notes | This woman, identified only as "General Taylor's wife, " had her portrait taken with a traditional clam basket in front of a handmade cattail mat. She wears a crucifix pendant, a symbol of the Christian faith introduced by missionaries in the mid-1800s.
Norwegian-born Anders Wilse moved to Seattle in 1890 to work as a surveyor and engineer. After photographing the building of the Great Northern Railway through the Cascades and working as a cartographer, Wilse turned to commercial photography in 1897.
