| Title | Indian woman and canoe at the Seattle waterfront, 1898 |
| Photographer | Anderson, O.P. (Oliver Phelps) |
| Studio Location | United States--Washington (State)--Seattle |
| Date | 1898 |
| Notes | Native people from many parts of Puget Sound came to Seattle to trade and buy supplies. In this photo, a woman holding a basket stands by a large canoe at the Seattle waterfront. The tall prow of the canoe and the design of her hat suggest that she is from Vancouver Island or some other part of coastal Canada. The photo was taken in Seattle, two blocks south of King Street, near First Avenue.
Oliver Phelps Anderson arrived in Seattle in 1878. He operated a map & blueprint company in the late 1880s, and in 1898 established the Anderson Supply Company, a camera supply house. Anderson died in 1941. (Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, pp. 6-7.) |
