PhotographerAnderson, O.P. (Oliver Phelps)
Studio NameAnderson Supply Company
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1895
NotesBetween the 1860s and the early 1900s, hops were grown widely in western Washington state as a flavoring for beer. It took many people to pick the hop cones each September. Many Native American families traveled to the hop fields where they camped out and helped with the harvest. Some returned to the same hop fields each year, and this became an important social event. Schools were closed during the harvest so that children could help in the fields. This photo, probably from the 1890s, shows Indian men, women, and children at work in a hop field near Kent, Washington. The dried blossoms of the hop plant, called cones, fill the large baskets in the foreground.

Caption on image: "Indian hop pickers at Kent."

Oliver Phelps Anderson arrived in Seattle in 1878. He operated a map & blueprint company in the late 1880s, and in 1898 established Anderson Supply Company, a camera supply house. Anderson died in 1941. (Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, pp. 6-7.)
