NotesThe Quileute, who live at La Push on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, remained relatively remote from white civilization until 1882, when A.W. Smith established a school there. The Quileute Reservation was established seven years later by Executive Order of the President of the United States. In this photo, Smith (left center) and his wife (right) pose with a group of Quileute school children next to a recently-built structure which may be the school.
