Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Tacoma
Dateca. 1885
NotesStarting in the middle of the 19th century, church groups and the United States government set up boarding schools for Native Americans. Here, children from many tribes were taught how to speak English and how to make a living. They were separated from their elders and were discouraged from learning their tribal traditions and language.

This photo shows the buildings and students of the Industrial Boarding School on the Puyallup Reservation, Washington Territory, sometime between 1880 and 1889. During the 1880s, a number of new buildings were added, and the school grew from 125 to about 200 pupils. Later called the Cushman School, it remained open until 1920. By that time, Indian children were allowed to attend local public schools. Washington became a state in 1889.

Photographer U.P. Hadley arrived in Tacoma in the 1880s, and later moved north to Lynden, Washington. He died in nearby Bellingham in 1912. His wife, Hattie, was also a photographer. (Mike Cirelli, personal communication; Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, p. 498.)
