TitlePat Kanim : Snoqualmie Chief, ca. 1855
PhotographerMoore, George N.
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1855
NotesPat Kanim, or Patkanim, was the chief of the Snoqualmie people. In the 1840s, he was unfriendly to the white settlers who were starting to come into the Pacific Northwest. After a trip to San Francisco, he decided that fighting incoming settlers would be disastrous for his people. He kept friendly relations with settlers in the Seattle area and helped fight off hostile tribes. Pat Kanim's name is also spelled Patkanim. Photographer George Moore may have printed this portrait in the 1880s. It seems to have been copied from a tintype, possibly taken as early as the 1850s.

George N. Moore opened a studio in Seattle sometime after 1870 and was active in the area until 1897. (Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 35.)
