TitleIndian women hop pickers, Snoqualmie Hop Ranch, ca. 1895
PhotographerSoule, John P.
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1895
NotesNative people from many tribes traveled to work in western Washington hop fields each fall. Some came by canoe from as far away as Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This seasonal work gave them a chance to earn the money they needed to buy things in a cash economy. In this 1890s photo, taken at Snoqualmie Hop Ranch in western Washington state, two Indian women stand in a hop field holding traditional cedar bark baskets. Other baskets filled with the pale hop blossoms sit on the ground in the background (right). Hops are used to flavor beer.

Photographer John P. Soule was active in the Seattle area in the 1880s and 1890s. He died in Seattle in 1904. (Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 42; Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, p. 502.)
