| Notes | Many of the Makah women who lived on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, were known for their excellent basketry. They prepared grasses and roots to make a variety of baskets and mats for daily use. Some of their coiled root baskets were watertight. This photo, taken sometime between about 1900 and 1910, shows a Makah basketmaker on the beach, probably at Port Townsend. She is using cedar bark strips to make a dry storage container.
James McCurdy was born in Port Townsend, on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, in 1872. He spent many years of his childhood in Neah Bay and returned to Port Townsend in 1894. McCurdy was a banker, author, and active photographer, especially of the people and maritime activities of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. He died in 1942. (Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 33.) |
