TitleKitchen girls, Tulalip Indian School, ca. 1912
PhotographerBrady, Ferd (Ferdinand)
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Everett
Dateca. 1912
NotesEvery student at the boarding school spent at least half of his or her day working in some part of the operation. Boys rotated about every six weeks between jobs as carpenter, engineer, farmer or dairyman; girls were assigned to sewing, darning, laundry and kitchen work.

The students raised most of the school's food on the grounds and prepared it in the kitchen. In this photo, Mrs. Ryman, the cook, supervises bread baking. Identified workers are: Laura Wilbur (Swinomish), kneeling at left; Julia Abbott (Lummi), second from left; Catherine Edwards (Swinomish); and Isabella Louke (Muckleshoot).BR>BR>Caption on image: "Kitchen girls T.I.S."

Photographer Ferd Brady had a studio in Marysville, Washington from 1907 to 1910, then moved to Everett, and finally settled in Anacortes in the 1920s. In the 1910s, he had a government contract to photograph the people and activities at the Tulalip Indian School, near Marysville. Brady closed his Everett studio in 1952 and died in 1967.
