TitleHospital staff, Tulalip Indian School, ca. 1912
PhotographerBrady, Ferd (Ferdinand)
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Everett
Dateca. 1912
NotesIllness was a constant fear among boarding school students and staff. The influenza epidemic of 1918 hit hard at Tulalip, and there was a very real threat of tuberculosis for many years. The hospital building had two wards, one for boys and one for girls. The dormitories each had a sick room for minor ailments. The staff in this photo include student nurses in training: Josie Cayou (Swinomish); Theresa Young (Tulalip); Myrtle Loughrey (Suquamish); Clara Jones (Swinomish); Emily Limon (Upper Skagit); and Annie Nason (Muckleshoot, in center). Nurse O'Dell and Dr. Buchanan stand at the rear.

Photographer Ferd Brady had a studio in Marysville, Washington from 1907 to 1910, then moved to Everett, and finally settled in Anacortes in the 1920s. In the 1910s, he had a government contract to photograph the people and activities at the Tulalip Indian School, near Marysville. Brady closed his Everett studio in 1952 and died in 1967. (Everett Public Library, "An Index of Everett Photographers: 1890-1935, " p. 13; Anacortes Museum exhibition files.)
