| Notes | Canoe racing has been part of native culture in the Puget Sound area for many generations. Here, at the Tulalip Indian Reservation, two-person teams compete in small dugouts. The traditional Coast Salish notched-prow style of canoe can be seen, along with the Nuu-chah-nulth, or Nootka, style of canoe, second from left. The former became extremely rare by the middle of the century, as the latter became more numerous.

Photographer Ferd Brady had a studio in Marysville, Washington from 1907 to 1910, then moved to Everett, and finally settled in Anacortes in the 1920s. In the 1910s, he had a government contract to photograph the people and activities at the Tulalip Indian School, near Marysville. Brady closed his Everett studio in 1952 and died in 1967.
