TitleTwo racing canoes, Tulalip Bay, ca. 1912
PhotographerBrady, Ferd (Ferdinand)
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Everett
Dateca. 1912
NotesAt the Tulalip Indian Reservation, canoe races often took place on the 4th of July. Eleven-person teams competed in many different races with different types of canoes. Girls also participated on their own teams, usually with a male bow man and captain. In this photo, the boys race in long canoes.

Photographer Ferd Brady had a studio in Marysville, Washington from 1907 to 1910, then moved to Everett, and finally settled in Anacortes in the 1920s. In the 1910s, he had a government contract to photograph the people and activities at the Tulalip Indian School, near Marysville. Brady closed his Everett studio in 1952 and died in 1967. (Everett Public Library, "An Index of Everett Photographers: 1890-1935, " p. 13; Anacortes Museum exhibition files.)
