TitleQuinault graveyard across the Quinault River from Taholah, Washington, in drawing made ca. 1885
Original CreatorWilloughby, Sarah, 1841-1913
NotesPhotograph of drawing of woman bearing bundle walking along shore in front of a cemetery; on right is a canoe elevated on slitls, in center are small buildings, and on left is a circular building flying an American flag

Note from unidentified source: Indian graveyard across the river from the village of Quinault (now renamed Taholah). In the large ocean-going canoe are the remains of eight brothers and sisters out of one family. When an Indian died and before the corpse was cold a rope was put under the knees and around the back of the neck by which means the body was drawn up and tied in as small a bundle as possible. All belongings of the deceased were placed in and on the grave to be used in the happy hunting grounds.
