| Title | Tlingit totem pole in front of wooden structure, Wrangell, Alaska |
| Notes | On verso of image: Totem at Wrangell. Picture given to Viola E. Garfield by Mrs. J.W. Young, Ketchikan 8/12/40. This pole was owned by A. Rasmussen, Skagway. See Niblack, Coast Indians, Plate LXV, fig. 347. The top figure is beaver and not the bear. Rasmussen says the three figures below the beaver were carved separately and nailed to the pole at a later time. It may be that there were two poles though. This is not likely. Niblack says: "Grave of Chief Shustocks on Shustock's Point, opposite Wrangell. Pole is surmounted by black bear." It is in front of a square house with a high platformed square under the roof. Pole bought by Terr. Museum, Juneau from Rasmussen's estate - Oct. 1945. |
