William Shelton carving a story pole, ca. 1920
William Shelton carving a story pole, ca. 1920
TitleWilliam Shelton carving a story pole, ca. 1920
Studio NameWebster & Stevens
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Dateca. 1920
NotesSnohomish cultural leader William Shelton carved several "story poles" as he termed them, based on legends told to him by elders on the Tulalip Reservation. The animal and human figures resemble carvings he remembered seeing on interior houseposts of traditional dwellings. The Puget Sound Salish did not carve totem poles with family crests like the northern Northwest Coast Indians. This pole was erected in Everett, Washington on July 4, 1923 and has figures of octopus, [unknown], man, and frog. It is currently under restoration at Legion Park in Everett.

Caption information from William Shelton, Story of the Totem Pole.

Photographers Ira Webster and Nelson Stevens opened their Seattle studio in 1902. They were the official photographers for The Seattle Times for 23 years, beginning in 1906, and also did extensive commercial photography work in Seattle and King County. Webster retired in 1925 and died in 1942; and Stevens died around 1930. (Firm stationery; Charles T. Hommel, A Guide to Historical Photograph Collections in Seattle, p. 46.)
