Caption on image: 'Shet-a-mo-on-e'. A noted chief of Yakimas. Copyrighted by Rutter. 1900. The Tepee is buffalo skins.
Note on verso of photograph: Shut-a-mo-ne, Sheep Cross Horns. This Indian is half Yakima and half Umatilla. His uncle was an Umatilla Chief. He served with U.S. Troops during the Bannock war of 1878, and killed the Bannock chief, and brought his head back to the camp of General Howard. He prevented the Umatillas from joining the hostiles and Bannocks in war against the whites. He dies several years ago, and at the big potlatch his war horse and nearly all his belongings were given to Shut-a-mo-ne, his nephew, he being the nearest living relative. It is the Umatilla Chief's dress that is now worn by Shut-a-mo-ne as shown in this picture. |
