| Caption | "The Waiting Multitudes" was commissioned by Suzzallo architects in 1967 following the opening of the new wing of the library in 1963. Of the sculpture, Jensen wrote that it "represents the aggregate peoples of the world who suffer from the many and compounding problems that beset them…(over)population, food shortage(s), poverty, disease, injustice, war. The people are fearful and anxious, waiting for help, for solutions. I have tried to express this mood by suggesting a mass of quietly watching humanity that is (also) a somber and menacing storm cloud…There are two small projections I think of as children's arms…pointed at the students…who (can) now open their minds to the real needs and find answers." |
| Artist Information | Born in Seattle in 1929, Ray Jensen made a name for himself in the art community for his unique sculptures. After attaining his B.F.A. from the University of Washington in 1953 and an M.F.A. from Cornell in sculpture, his work gained national acclaim during the 1960s with his metalwork and sculpture. He was commissioned by local libraries and cities to create art in public spaces around the Northwest. Jensen taught art at Bellevue Community College and was a member of the Cornish School of Allied Arts Faculty before his retirement. He continues to live in Washington State. |
