| Caption | Dennis Evans, a native of Yakima, WA, earned two UW degrees—a BFA in Ceramics and an MFA in Design. Originally a science major, he has a thirst for categorizing and exploring the origins and history of knowledge and language. His work is exhibited extensively throughout the country in museums and public corporate collections. Dennis created this mixed media piece specifically for the Libraries Petersen Room. The Latin translation reads: "I make free men of children by means of books and balances." This work is a dramatic example of the recurring theme combining images of science and literature, including found objects, glass, printmaking and encaustic painting. All during his creative career, Dennis has "Examined and questioned man's unquenchable curiosity and man's universal and passionate desire to give order and hierarchy to his observations (artist's quote). He is also a book maker and publisher. Dennis is the husband of artist Nancy Mee, whose work graces the east end of the Petersen Room. Donated in 2006 by Dennis E. Evans as a part of the Anne Gould Hauberg University of Washington Libraries Artist Images Series Collection. |
