""This magnificent range of mountains was photographed from the city of Sitka. When king frost reigns with undisputed sway, the white coated monsters stand out in wonderous beauty forever silently and unceasingly performing their duty as geographical landmarks, dividers of territory, or at least monuments to the wonders of nature. In 1867, when the United States government paid Russia $7, 200, 00 for the territory of Alaska, many people looked upon the deal as being foolish and a waste of money, for which comparatively no return seemed likely.
