NotesThe United Service Organizations, better known as the USO, was formed in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt for an organization to coordinate handling recreational needs of members of the U.S. armed forces, while on leave. Six civilian agencies combined to form the new organization, including the Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian Association, Young Women's Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. The USO was incorporated in New York on February 4, 1941, and became the home-away-from-home for servicemen during World War II.
