| Notes | Seattle's public library, housed in the old Henry Yesler mansion, burned to the ground on January 1, 1901, destroying most of the collection. Within a week, Andrew Carnegie promised $200, 000 to build a new library for the city. Dedicated on December 19, 1906, the Carnegie Library covered the entire block between Madison and Spring Streets, between 4th and 5th Avenues. This library building was demolished in 1957. |
