NotesAfter the Northern Pacific Railway chose Tacoma as the west coast terminus for the transcontinental line in 1873, Seattle boosters responded by organizing a drive to build the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad. This line was intended to run from Seattle to connect with the Northern Pacific at Walla Walla. The trustees, including Arthur Denny, J.M Colman and Dexter Horton, sold stock in the company, issuing certificates like this one. Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad construction began in the spring of 1874 at Georgetown, south of Seattle, reaching Renton in 1877. Chinese laborers, organized by Chin Gee Hee, extended the line as far as Newcastle in 1878, connecting the coal country of south King County to the coal bunkers at Pike Street, on Elliott Bay. In 1880, the Oregon Improvement Company purchased the Seattle and Walla Walla, then renamed the Columbia and Puget Sound Railroad. In 1951, it was merged into the Great Northern Railway.
