TitlePhoto of Public Health Nurse with family, 1951
Date1951
NotesThe Seattle Visiting Nurse Service was established in 1912 under American Red Cross administration. In 1928 it was transferred to Seattle Health Department administration. The job of nurses was, upon request of any family, to visit the home, help interpret doctors orders, give necessary home nursing care, and teach the family to understand illness and care for the patient. If the family could pay for the visit, a modest charge was made; otherwise the Board of Health paid for the visit with donated funds. The Visiting Nurses Service was a part of the merged Seattle-King County Department of Public Health until 1975. This photograph is one of a series of ca. 2000 photographs that document the program activities and staff of the Seattle-King County Health Department and its predecessor agencies. Major topics included food handling and safety; garbage collection and disposal; housing conditions; maternal and child health; milk inspection; outreach programs; rodent and insect control; tuberculosis care; and water quality, particularly in the Cedar River watershed. Also included are images of the Pike Place Market and of "Hooverville" (shack housing south of downtown Seattle during the Great Depression of the 1930's).
