NotesThe sailing schooner WAWONA was launched in 1897 at the Bendixsen shipyard in Fairhaven, California. The WAWONA was the largest three-masted schooner ever built on the west coast of North America. The ship originally carried lumber along the west coast but after 1914 was used as a fishing schooner. The WAWONA's cod-fishing crew of about 36 men spent six months of each year in the icy Bering Sea. To this day, the WAWONA holds the record for the most cod caught in a single fishing season.
