NotesDenny's painting depicts the settlers of Seattle running to the North Blockhouse on January 26, 1856. A group of about 700 Native warriors had gathered in the woods east of town, and were poised for attack. The U.S. Sloop-of-War DECATUR is at anchor in Elliott Bay, prepared to fire its carronades. This painting of the Battle of Seattle was completed in the 1880s by the woman who painted herself as a toddler, lower right, in her mother's arms. The artist Emily Inez Denny was the daughter of David and Louisa Boren Denny.
