| Title | Mercer girls chest, Seattle, 1866 |
| Photographer | Richard Nicol |
| Date | 1866 |
| Notes | This trunk used by sisters Elisabeth (Libbie) and Anna Peebles, two of Asa Mercer's "girls" who came to Seattle from New York in May 1866 aboard the steamer CONTINENTAL. Faced with a ten-to-one disproportion between men and women in Washington Territory, Mercer developed a scheme to bring women orphaned or widowed by the Civil War to the far northwest. Mercer had the double goal of providing wives for lonely territorial bachelors and encouraging cultured, educated women to civilize central Puget Sound. |
