NotesThis rare book, entitled Black Square and Compass, 200 Years of Prince Hall Freemasonary, is by Joseph A. Wilkes, Jr., and held in the library of the Black Heritage Society of Washington State. The Prince Hall Masons were first organized in 1775 among free blacks in Boston, Massachusetts, and Seattle's Prince Hall Masons met in the lodge at 23rd Avenue and Madison Street.
