| Notes | Caption filed with photograph: Senator Henry M. Jackson (D. Wash.) is presented a model of the Army's "Redstone" missile by Lt. Col. Edward N. Hathaway, legislative liason officer. Jackson, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has been a leader in the fight for American missile development to offset the growing Soviet missile threat. Redstone is the largest of the Army's missiles. It is designed to provide the ground commander with around-the-clock, all-weather capability for delivery of atomic warheads on strategic and tactical targets. This medium range missile stands abouth three stories high and has a diameter of six feet. It operates in the higher reaches of the atmosphere, carrying its own supply of oxygen fuel, which consists of liquid oxygen, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Launched vertically, it travels to target, after propulsion ceases, along a ballistic path comparable to that of an artillery shell. Redstone units already have been activated and it is anticipated will be operational about mid-1958. Photo by Russ Holt. |
