Contextual NotesDr. William B. Walsh - who was affected by the poor medical conditions he witnessed in the South Pacific as a medical officer aboard a destroyer during World War II - started Project Hope (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) in 1958. He convinced President Dwight D. Eisenhower to donate a former U.S. Navy ship for reconversion to a floating hospital that would take medical staff to underserved nations to provide medical training and medical care. The government donated the U.S.S. Consolation to Project Hope, and the ship was sent to Seattle to be overhauled. On September 22, 1960, the newly outfitted, newly named S.S. Hope set sail from San Francisco to its first stop in Jakarta, Indonesia, before heading to South Vietnam. The 258-bed Hope carried 15 physicians, two dentists, 25 nurses and 30 auxiliary personnel on its first voyage. The hospital ship spent 14 years in service, carrying doctors and nurses all over the world. After the ship was retired, Project Hope continued to expand its operations, building medical centers in impoverished regions and delivering medical supplies.
